A new test of entry-level training, behind-the-wheel hours, and pre-training. What you should know.

In February, California announced new requirements for obtaining commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs). The change was reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Drivers will now have to pass an entry-level training test. Training for this exam will be given by a provider listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Registry of Training Providers.

Federal requirements are already in effect. DMV Director Steve Gordon said, “DMV has made great progress to license more commercial drivers safely and as quickly as possible. We know how important it is for the movement of goods to have safe commercial drivers on the road. We have recently made changes that allow us to offer thousands more tests each month, and we continue to work with our federal partners to meet the need for safe commercial drivers”.

These requirements are mandatory for drivers who want to obtain an original Class A or B CDL, for those who want to upgrade a Class B CDL to a Class A. Or for those who need an endorsement for a passenger bus, school bus, or transportation of hazardous materials. California Class A or B applicants will be required to complete a minimum of 15 hours of behind-the-wheel training and provide proof of completion from the DMV.

For their part, training providers must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. They will be the ones who send an electronic certification when the driver has approved this process.
